Hastings & St Leonards United - 1908-1909 Season
The club fell short in it's target of winning Division Two of the
Southern League and earn promotion into Division One. The club made
a remarkable run in the FA Cup beating New Brompton (Gillingham) in
the Fourth Qualifying Round to set up a First Round tie away to
Blackpool. This was to be the highlight of their season, as the club
lost their star player, top scorer and local hero Bert Beney. Who
joined Arsenal in February 1909 for £225, which a massive life line
for a club who struggled financially throughout it's short existence.
Beney still managed to end the season as top scorer, but was sorely
missed. No more than 20 players were used throughout the season, after
it was decided to drop the reserve team to ease the playing budget,
forcing Trainer Jack Griffiths to make a handful of appearance, also
amateur players John Tosswill, Thomas Swain and Harman were drafted
into the team.
